For Accurate Technologies Inc., which makes devices for Ford Motor Company and Shaurya Racing, a new facility at their worldwide headquarters outside Detroit, Michigan, meant an opportunity for a new look. The powers that be wanted a system for the floors, walls, and ceilings that would not only be functional but also attractive.

The famed tunnel sign at Notre Dame Stadium, built in 1929 and home to the 11-time national championship football program at the University of Notre Dame, reads “Play Like a Champion Today.” For the nearly 80,000 fans and prospective recruits that visit on Saturdays in the fall to cheer on the Fighting Irish, they’d like the legendary stadium to look worthy of a champion, too!

Originally, the owners wanted most of the concrete floors to be polished. But the 1,900-square-foot (176.5 m²) Founders Club area was right near the entrance to the pool, which meant that water might be tracked in by residents.

The client, which has four different locations, wanted to complete the reworking on one of the building’s floors during winter break. There were no staff or children to work around, but the crew only had one week to complete the job. That meant no time for mockups, mistakes, or slow-cure coatings.

The test lab supports the school’s education mission, with commercial and government-sponsored research conducted in areas such as calm water resistance, seakeeping, and propeller tests.

“We had to install below-grade waterproofing, traffic coating, cold-applied waterproofing, joint sealants, expansion joints, and site caulking,” said Chamberlin’s Michael Brau.

The client, was opening a new warehouse that was to use fork lifts. And those lifts would need to be charged. A battery charging station equals battery acid. And so the next logical step was install a protective coating system on the new concrete floor.

For many, working out at the gym usually results in being in better shape or higher fitness, but for the four- to six-person crew from Abbruzzese Floors Inc., they got something special out of their gym membership: a coatings job.

A hot summer, a poor concrete pour, and a building with no electricity. This could have added up to the makings of a failed mission, but with an experienced crew and adaptable materials, the new epoxy floor at a naval base didn’t go awry.

When executives with the global H&M group saw rough and aged concrete at two of its shops in cosmopolitan Hong Kong, they realized they needed help updating the facilities to better convey the brand’s colorful and youthful image.
