PPG Partners with Trade Industry Groups to Fill Widening Workforce Gap

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, job openings in the construction and painting industries will climb significantly based on the need to replace an aging workforce who leaves the occupation each year through 2029. To meet this demand, the PPG Foundation is investing in virtual training programs to provide diverse individuals with the skills needed to enter this growing workforce.

PPG believes education is an important driver for innovation and economic prosperity, and that inclusive cultures and diverse teams perform better. As such, the PPG Foundation is committed to supporting educational initiatives that help communities meet today’s demands for a skilled workforce by fostering interest in manufacturing and information technology. To fulfill this mission, the PPG Foundation has provided grants to the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and the Painting & Decorating Contractors of America (PCA) to support virtual educational training programs and create awareness about careers in the construction and painting industry.

With PPG’s support, CSI will develop a paints and coatings three-level training course and a certification program, targeting women, veterans and millennials, and others interested in the architectural, engineering and construction community. The courses will cover soft skills and professional development, an introduction to the industry, and information on finishes. Similarly, PCA will implement a video-based painting apprenticeship program featuring professional painters demonstrating foundational painting skills in order to prepare those who wish to pursue a career in the industry. Targeting underrepresented youths, the program is estimated to provide employment opportunities in the painting industry for up to 700 young people each year.

These educational partnerships demonstrate PPG’s commitment to providing opportunities for diverse groups and increasing professionals in the industry. Please let me know if you are interested in interviewing a PPG spokesperson or if you’d like more information about these grants.
