The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) recently issued comments regarding the deadly collapse of the Champlain Towers condominium building in Surfside, Florida, near Miami. Several media reports and analyses of prior engineering reports have identified corrosion as a possible factor behind the tragedy.

AMPP members worldwide are greatly saddened by the collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida. The tragic loss of life strikes at the heart of our members who have dedicated their careers to corrosion prevention and public safety.

AMPP has formed an Advisory Panel of renowned experts in corrosion of concrete structures to engage in analysis of the Champlain Towers disaster. The panel is focused on fast-tracking standards, guidelines, and training requirements to improve inspection, evaluation, and ensuing repairs of concrete structures. Our core mission is to protect the public, and today, we can think of nothing more critical than working with our members to ensure a catastrophic event like this does not happen again.

This event is a wake-up call to all owners of residential, commercial, and industrial structures. Regardless of the cause, this is a powerful reminder that there is no substitute for intensive, immediate attention to corrosion prevention and control.

Our thoughts are with the families who are suffering as they wait for news about their loved ones.  AMPP will do its part to inform and raise awareness among federal agencies and legislators who have the power to preserve the integrity of the structures where we live and work.
