Roof Corrosion Forces Closure of Oregon Aquatic Center

Following a closer inspection of the roof at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, Ore., local officials have chosen to close the entire swimming complex while contractors gather more information about necessary repairs.

The indoor pool area was initially closed in late September out of an abundance of caution, following a preliminary inspection that revealed corrosion in the roof.

Subsequently, a follow-up examination by structural contractors showed that additional repairs would be needed.

Oct. 8 Update by Local Officials

“We continue to remain closed until further notice,” facility operators said in an Oct. 8 statement.

“We are actively working with contractors to determine necessary repairs and will continue to provide updates as we receive more information. We are grateful for your patience and understanding at this time.”

Operated and staffed by the Corvallis Parks and Recreation Department, the facility is equipped with four individual swimming pools as well as Otter Beach, the city’s famous outdoor water park.

Concerns for Roofing Integrity

With no reopening timetable for the Osborn Aquatic Center, city officials in Corvallis are working to further understand the scope of the issue.

“During routine maintenance, corrosion was discovered in the natatorium, causing concerns for the integrity of the roofing structure,” the city said in a statement.

The closure is for the entire facility, which includes indoor and outdoor pools, showers, classrooms, and offices. All programming, including swimming lessons and exercise classes, are currently postponed.

All Scheduled Events Canceled

With corrosion concerns in mind, all scheduled events at the facility have been canceled, and Parks and Recreation staff have been made available to assist customers with questions or refunds.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to resuming operations at the pool as soon as possible,” the city said in a statement

“Further testing and remediation of the structure will be scheduled as soon as possible, and we will keep [users] apprised of any options for reopening as we learn more.”
