Paving the Way to Resilience and Sustainability in Concrete

The concrete industry has long been a cornerstone of construction, providing essential foundations and structures in everything from residential buildings to large-scale industrial facilities.

But as demands for durability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility grow, so, too, does the need for innovation in the field.

Recent advancements in concrete technology are reshaping the way we think about this traditional material, making it stronger, more sustainable, and increasingly versatile. From ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) to environmentally friendly cement alternatives, staying informed about these shifts is crucial for anyone working in the field.

In this roundup article from our 2025 Concrete Covered supplement, CoatingsPro Magazine takes a closer look at the latest trends, emerging technologies, equipment developments, and research driving change in the industry.

Reducing Concrete’s Carbon Footprint

Concrete is one of the most ubiquitous products in the world, thought to be second only to water — and its ubiquity is reflected in the structures that surround us, from office buildings and parking garages to personal residences to large-scale industrial infrastructure. There are several reasons for this, including its versatility, cost effectiveness, and extreme durability.

Yet, concrete’s popularity also presents a distinct environmental challenge. Traditional manufacturing processes require large amounts of fossil fuels and account for at least seven percent of the world’s carbon emissions, according to a report by the International Energy Agency.

Across the industry, researchers are exploring more alternative and eco-conscious materials, processes, and technology to help curb the industry’s massive carbon footprint.

“Sustainability has become a major initiative over the past several years and continues to guide the direction of the concrete industry into the future,” said Stephen Cordova, Western Specialty Contractors’ branch manager for San Antonio, in an interview with CoatingsPro

Reflecting on nine years in the construction industry, six of which have been in the restoration industry, he said he sees the industry as a whole shifting toward innovative solutions in response to growing concerns and regulations. “Major players in the industry are now, more than ever, committed to investing in sustainable practices and implementing new, sustainable technology into their product lines and services.”

This includes both for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as research centers, labs, and universities.
